Properties of the Distant Kuiper Belt: Results from the Palomar Distant Solar System Survey
We present the results of a wide-field survey using the 1.2-m Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory. This survey was designed to find the most distant members of the Kuiper belt and beyond. We searched ∼12,000 deg2 down to a mean limiting magnitude of 21.3 in R. A total number of 52 KBOs and Centaurs have been detected, 25 of which were discovered in this survey. Except for the re-dete...
متن کاملObservational Limits on a Distant Cold Kuiper Belt
Almost all of the > 600 known Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) have been discovered within 50 AU of the Sun. One possible explanation for the observed lack of KBOs beyond 50 AU is that the distant Kuiper belt is dynamically very cold, and thus thin enough on the sky to have slipped between previous deep survey fields. We have completed a survey designed to search for a dynamically cold distant Kuiper...
متن کاملKuiper Belt searches from the Palomar 5-m telescope
Motivated by a desire to understand the size distributon of the Kuiper Belt, an observing program was conducted at the Mount Palomar 5-m telescope from 19941996. The observations consisted of follow-up observations of known objects (in order to improve their very indeterminate orbits), and deep exposures on a single field to search for small objects below the limiting magnitudes of other survey...
متن کاملThe CFEPS Kuiper Belt Survey: Strategy and Pre-survey Results
We present the data acquisition strategy and characterization procedures for the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS), a sub-component of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. The survey began in early 2003 and as of summer 2005 has covered 430 square degrees of sky within a few degrees of the ecliptic. Moving objects beyond the orbit of Uranus are detected to a magnitude lim...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Observations of Optically Selected Clusters of Galaxies from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey
We have conducted a redshift survey of sixteen cluster candidates from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS) to determine both the density of PDCS clusters and the accuracy of the estimated redshifts presented in the PDCS catalog (Postman et al. 1996). We find that the matched-filter redshift estimate presented in the PDCS has an error σz = 0.06 in the redshift range 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.35 based on...
